Senator Tammy Suzanne Green Baldwin (born February 11, 1962) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the junior United States senator from Wisconsin since January 2013. 

A member of the Democratic Party, she served three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the 78th district, and from 1999 to 2013 represented Wisconsin’s 2nd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

In 1984, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Government and Mathematics from Smith College. She also received a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1989. She subsequently started private practice from 1989 to 1992.

Baldwin started her political career while in Law School. Then, she became a member of the Madison City Council in 1986. She was also elected to the Dane County Board of Supervisors from 1986 to 1994.

While serving as a member of the Board of Supervisors, Baldwin ran for a seat at the Wisconsin State Assembly. She won the Democratic primary and defeated Labor and Farm nominee in the general election. She was re-elected in 1994 and 1996. She served till 1998 when she declared her intention to run for a seat at the U.S. House of Reps.

In 1998, Congressman Scott Klug retired from the U.S. House of Representatives. Baldwin ran for the seat and won the general election. She is the first woman and openly gay person in the U.S. House of Reps. 

She was re-elected in 2000 and served till 2013. In 2011, Baldwin announced her candidacy for a seat at the U.S. Senate. Fortunately, she ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and faced Republican nominee Tommy Thompson in the general election. 

She won the general election and assumed office in 2013. She is also the first gay person in the U.S. Senate. She was re-elected in 2018 with 55.4% of the votes.

Baldwin is instrumental in improving her state’s education sector. She addressed the student debt crisis. She also worked to make college affordable and accessible to every student and family. In fact, she has introduced Acts and legislation to improve the sector.
