Senator Tammy Suzanne Green Baldwin (D) is an American lawyer and politician. She has been serving as a junior U.S. Senator from Wisconsin under the Democrats since 2013. She was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1992 to 1998. She also served as a member of the U.S. House of Reps from 1999 to 2013.

Baldwin was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on February 11, 1962. Her mother developed mental illness and opioid addiction. She grew up with her grandparents. There, she graduated from Madison West High School in 1980. 

In 1984, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Government and Mathematics from Smith College. She also received a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1989. She subsequently started private practice from 1989 to 1992.

Baldwin started her political career while in Law School. Then, she became a member of the Madison City Council in 1986. She was also elected to the Dane County Board of Supervisors from 1986 to 1994.

While serving as a member of the Board of Supervisors, Baldwin ran for a seat at the Wisconsin State Assembly. She won the Democratic primary and defeated Labor and Farm nominee in the general election. She was re-elected in 1994 and 1996. She served till 1998 when she declared her intention to run for a seat at the U.S. House of Reps.

In 1998, Congressman Scott Klug retired from the U.S. House of Representatives. Baldwin ran for the seat and won the general election. She is the first woman and openly gay person in the U.S. House of Reps. 

She was re-elected in 2000 and served till 2013. In 2011, Baldwin announced her candidacy for a seat at the U.S. Senate. Fortunately, she ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and faced Republican nominee Tommy Thompson in the general election. 

She won the general election and assumed office in 2013. She is also the first gay person in the U.S. Senate. She was re-elected in 2018 with 55.4% of the votes.

Baldwin is instrumental in improving her state’s education sector. She addressed the student debt crisis. She also worked to make college affordable and accessible to every student and family. In fact, she has introduced Acts and legislation to improve the sector.

In a bid to improve access to affordable and quality healthcare, Baldwin led the introduction of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

She co-sponsored the Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act. The Act aimed at helping struggling students with loans. It also provided low-interest loans, especially car, mortgage, or business loans. She also introduced Acts including America’s College Promise Act and the Working Act. 

She worked hard to secure the Perkins loans to help low-income students.

In the economic sector, Baldwin has worked fervently to improve the people and the state’s financial status. Her administration also strengthened the manufacturing economy. She has worked to create new jobs, including manufacturing jobs.

She is also a leading voice in economic investment. She has shown a deep commitment to investment in innovation, science, and technology development.

Her administration also boasts of supporting and working with the veterans. She has also worked to help their families and improve their quality of life.

Baldwin began facing criticism at an early phase of her role as a senator. She was morally criticized for being a Lesbian.

Sen. Tammy was criticized for the negligence of duties and abandoning her responsibilities as a senator. She was the only senator to have a detailed doctor’s report outlining the overprescription of opioids at the Tomah VA. Yet, she did nothing. 

This mixed-use of toxicity has caused the death of many veterans which include Jason Simcakoski. She also allegedly covered up the death.
