Senator Charles Ellis Schumer is an American politician. He is a senior U.S. Senator from New York under the Democrats since 1999. He has been the Senate Majority leader since January 2021. He is also the dean of the congressional delegation in New York. 

Schumer was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1975 to 1980. He was later elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. There, he represented the 16th, 10th, and 9th congressional districts from 1981 to 1998. 

Schumer was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 23rd, 1950. Born to a Jewish family, Schumer’s ancestors originated from modern-day Ukraine. He enrolled in many Brooklyn schools but graduated as a valedictorian of the James Madison High School.

At college, he originally majored in Chemistry at Harvard College. But he finished with a B.A. degree in Political Science in 1971. He then obtained a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1974.

Shortly after his J.D., he ran for a seat at the New York State Assembly and won. He served at the state assembly till 1980. 

In 1980, Democratic incumbent Holtzman left her position as a U.S. House of Reps member. Schumer ran for her vacant seat at the House and won. He assumed office the following year. He was re-elected eight times and served from 1981 till 1999. 

In 1998, Schumer announced her intention for a seat in the U.S. Senate. He won the Democratic primaries and got a 54% win at the general election against Republican incumbent D’Amato. He was re-elected in 2004, 2010, and 2016. 

In 2016, Schumer was elected to replace Harry Reid as the Senate Minority Leader. He also became the Senate Majority Leader in 2020.

During his time at the Senate, Schumer has worked relentlessly to improve the economy by supporting and creating jobs for youths. 

He has also championed creating effective agricultural measures to provide market support for farmers. He was one of the Senators that signed a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to provide a Margin Coverage Program for Dairy farmers. 

From snowstorms to flooding in upstate New York, Schumer was known for being there and doing the right thing for his people when they needed help. He helped achieve a $700,000 compensation from FEMA for a devastating flood in Gowanda in 2009. 

He also worked in immigration reform bills and packages, border security, broadening economic opportunities, and electoral reform. His administration also fostered quality health care. Schumer supported and voted for the Affordable Care Act and Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act.

In late 2018, a false report went about that Chuck Schemer’s Daughter breaks her silence about her dad’s affair with a high school Cheerleader. In a tweet on September 17th, 2018, Chuck was accused of raping a 16 years old friend of her daughter. But, he denied the allegations. Fortunately, a thorough investigation found him innocent. 

In less than ten years that he won a seat at the senate, Chuck Schemer was accused and criticized for spending more than $8,600 on minors, restaurants, and betting. And he pled guilty.

Final Thoughts

Schumer has dedicated his entire career to his state and his people. Boasting several legislative accomplishments, he has always been there for New Yorkers in times of need. 

But, Schumer was condemned for allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor. Yet, he was proven innocent. He got under fire again for some minor financial issues.
