Who’s in charge of Texas Unemployment Insurance Benefits?
In Texas, the Texas Workforce Commission is in charge of administering unemployment insurance benefits. The program is intended to assist qualifying jobless employees in maintaining their financial security while looking for jobs.
According to the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act, eligibility is based primarily on the fact that a claimant has lost a job due to no fault of their own. Employer taxes are used to support these UI benefits, which are paid to both the state and the federal government.

How To Qualify for Texas Unemployment Benefits
In Texas, the conditions for receiving unemployment benefits are based primarily on three factors:
- your previous taxable wages,
- the circumstances of your unemployment,
- and your continuous eligibility for weekly benefits.
To begin, an employee must demonstrate that he or she received earnings throughout more than one of the four calendar quarters that make up the base period. During the base period, your total income must be at least 37 times your weekly benefit amount.
If you were previously eligible for benefits, you must have earned six times the amount of your new weekly benefit since then. You must have been laid off due to no fault of your own, including quitting a job for a valid reason. Every week you request unemployment insurance benefits, you must continue to fulfill weekly benefit standards.
To be eligible for unemployment benefits in Texas, you must be a resident of the state and meet all of the following criteria:
- You are jobless due to no fault of your own.
- You worked in Texas for the previous 12 months.
- You were paid a certain amount of money based on Texas criteria.
- You are looking for job every week and receiving benefits.
How Much Unemployment Benefits Will I Get in Texas?
- Base Period: First 4 of the last 5 completed quarters
- Alt Base Period: N/A
- Duration of Benefits: 10-26 weeks
- Weekly Payment: Min $69 to Max $521
- Maximum Benefits Amount (1 year): $13,546
How Do I Apply for Texas Unemployment Benefits?
The TWC website is the simplest and most efficient method to apply for unemployment compensation. Before filing your unemployment claim, you must first create a username and password. You may use your account to handle your Texas benefits once it’s been created.
If you prefer, you can phone the Texas Workforce Commission Tele-Center at 800-939-6631 to file your unemployment insurance claim. Expect a significant wait time because phone traffic is unusually high.
How do I Manage My Texas Unemployment Benefits
During your UI benefits term, you must provide weekly personal information to the Texas Workforce Commission to ensure your eligibility for benefits.
You must answer questions regarding your job search activities if you are still able and available to work, and whether you have turned down any employment offers in the previous week every week. If you are accepted, the Texas Workforce Commission will examine your application and pay your weekly unemployment compensation.
How Do I Appeal a Texas Unemployment Decision?
If you are told that your application for benefits has been refused by the Texas Workforce Commission, you may appeal the decision through one of the following methods:
- At wc.texas.gov/jobseekers/how-appeal-decision, fill out and submit the online appeal form.
- Send a signed statement of appeal to the Appeals Department by mail or fax (instructions will be given with your denial letter).
- In person, at your local Workforce Solutions Office, submit a signed declaration of appeal.
You must file an appeal with the Texas Workforce Commission within 14 calendar days of receiving your letter. Your denial notice will also mention this deadline.
You’ll attend an appeals hearing at this stage, and if you disagree with the outcome, you can submit a Motion for Rehearing within 14 days of receiving your decision. You can also appeal the verdict to a civil court within 28 days of receiving it if you wish.
How Do I Report a Texas Unemployment Fraud?
The Texas Workforce Commission is looking into probable unemployment insurance benefits fraud with vigour. Anyone who suspects fraud should report it online through the Texas Workforce Commission. You may also contact TWC Fraud Hotline at 800-252-3642 or submit an email to TWC.fraud@twc.state.tx.us.
How Do I Talk to a Person in Texas Unemployment Customer Service?
In order to speak with a customer service agent, call the unemployment benefits Tele-center at 1-800-939-6631. Business hours are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m CT for all seven days.
Some of the important phone numbers that you may need are:
Tele-Center, CSR Help Line – 800-939-6631 (All days, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
What if I quit?
In general, you are not eligible if you quit your employment freely.
If you quit for “good cause,” though, you may be able to collect. The state unemployment office determines what constitutes good reason, and you can make your case for getting benefits.
You should be entitled to a hearing if your claim is denied so that you can explain your claim. You should contact your local office because regulations and conditions differ from state to state.

- 4) Request a reference letter from your employer
- Review your financial positions, obligations.
