In January 2019, Governor Bill Lee named Dr. Jeff McCord to the position of Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

How To Qualify for Tennessee Unemployment Benefits

You may be eligible for unemployment insurance payments in Tennessee if you are unemployed due to no fault of your own, have earned sufficient qualifying income in the previous 12 months, and are willing, able, and available for work.

To be eligible for Tennessee unemployment benefits, you must be a Tennessee resident and meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are unemployed through no fault of your own
  • You worked in Tennessee during the past 12 months
  • You earned a minimum amount of wages determined by Tennessee guidelines
  • You are actively seeking work each week you are collecting benefits

Claimants must supply updated information about their job search and any employment offers they may have received on a weekly basis to be eligible for UI compensation.

To certify your weekly jobless claim, log in to the same Jobs4TN account you used to file your original unemployment claim. If your information confirms your ongoing eligibility, you will be paid for another week of unemployment benefits.

How Do I Appeal a Tennessee Unemployment Decision?

If your application for unemployment benefits has been refused, you can appeal to the state of Tennessee. The most convenient way to appeal is through Jobs4TN. Log in to your account and go to Services for Individuals > File Appeal. Then select Unemployment Assistance.

You must file an appeal within 15 calendar days after receiving the denial notification. You will be invited to a hearing after it has been received.

An appeals hearing officer will listen to testimony and review evidence such as documents supplied by both you and your employer, as well as any witnesses called by either party. The hearing officer will next make a decision solely on the basis of the facts and testimony given at the hearing.

Appeals of the hearing decision must be filed in writing with the Office of Administrative Review within 15 calendar days after receiving the hearing decision.

In general, you are not eligible if you leave your work freely.

If you quit for “good cause,” though, you may be able to collect. The state unemployment office determines what constitutes good reason, and you can make your case for getting benefits.

You should be entitled to a hearing if your claim is denied so that you can explain your claim. You should contact your local office because regulations and conditions differ from state to state.
