Senator William Morgan Cassidy is an American physician and politician. He has been serving as a senior US Senator from Louisiana under the Republicans since 2014. He was a member of the Louisiana State Senate from 2006 to 2009. He was also in the US House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015.
Cassidy was born in Highland Park, Illinois, on September 28, 1957. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at Louisiana State University in 1979. Senator Bill Cassidy also received a medical degree at the LSU School of Medicine in 1983.
Cassidy worked at the Earl K. Long Medical Center as a liver disease specialist. He also worked as a professor at the Louisiana State University’s School of Medicine in 1990.
In 1998, Cassidy co-founded the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic. The clinic offered free healthcare to uninsured residents of the area. He was also involved in setting up Health centers in Schools in East Baton Rouge. The nonprofit Health Centers provide vaccination for children against viral and contagious diseases.
In 2005, Senator Bill Cassidy led a group of volunteers to provide emergency medical care to hurricane victims. In 2010, LSU selected him for the honoris causa membership in Omicron Delta Kappa.

Cassidy started his political career as a Democrat. But, his position began to align with the Republicans in 2001. In 2006, he won a special election to represent District 16 at the Louisiana State Senate.
He won the election to represent Louisiana’s 6th district in the US House of Reps two years later. He defeated Democrat Don Cazayoux. He was re-elected twice.
In 2014, Cassidy ran for the seat of the US Senate. As luck would have it, Republican Senator David Vitter endorsed him. He defeated the three-term Democrat incumbent and assumed office in 2015. His victory was the first for the Republicans in Louisiana in 138 years. He won again in 2020.

He led the fight to cut taxes for middle-class families. He also worked hard for the provision of jobs and empowerment in Louisiana.
In his work to boost Louisiana’s economy, he cut red tapes for the growth of small businesses and startups. He also continues his relentless support for tech and energy development in Louisiana.
Cassidy is part of the Senators that introduced the Agricultural Trucking Relief Act. The act was aimed to ease regulatory burdens on the transport of agricultural produce.
Cassidy is an anti-gun control advocator. He believes gun control regulations would not stop or reduce gun crimes. He co-sponsored a bill that would allow people to have a concealed carry permit in other states.

Cassidy was one of the senators that signed Senator Tom Cotton’s warning letter to Iran. The letter warned the Iran government against signing any nuclear deal without congressional approval. But, the letter caused backlashes.
Also, Senator Mary Landrieu accused Cassidy of wrongly billing LSU while he was a member of Congress. In fact, Landrieu’s supporters also tagged him ‘fraud’ before the 2014 general elections.
The Louisiana Republican Party sanctioned Cassidy for switching support at Trump’s impeachment trial. He was the only Republican who voted in support that the trial is constitutional.

But, he was part of the senators who signed a controversial letter to the Iranian government. He was also accused of financial misappropriations. Yet, none of the allegations hampered both of his careers.
