Senator James Paul Lankford is an American politician. He has been serving as a junior U.S. Senator from Oklahoma under the Republican since 2014. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Then, he represented the Oklahoma 5th Congressional District from 2011 to 2015. 

Lankford was born in Dallas, Texas, on March 4, 1968. His parents divorced when he was four. But, his mother remarried, and the new family moved to Garland. Lankford graduated from Lakeview Centennial High School. 

In 1990, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from the University of Texas. But, he married before furthering his studies at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He received a Master’s degree in Divinity in 1994. 

After his Master’s degree, Lankford moved to Oklahoma City. There, he worked for the Baptist General Convention. He became the director of Student Missionaries and Fall Creek Youth Camp from 1995 to 2009.

Lankford started his political career in 2010. He contested for a seat at the U.S. House of Reps after incumbent Mary Fallin announced her retirement. Yet, Lankford won the Democratic primaries. He defeated Democratic nominee Bill Coyle to assume the seat. He won again in 2012 and served till 2015. 

In 2014, Lanford announced his candidacy to succeed Senator Tom Coburn. He made his intention known after Coborn retired from the U.S. Senate. He won the Republican primaries and won the special election in November 2014. He served Coburn’s final two years and was re-elected in 2016.

Lankford has worked hard in promoting the economic status of the state. He championed job creation and empowerment. He has also worked to grow private and small-scale businesses to grow the state’s economy. 

Lankford’s administration also boasts of environmental development. He supported the expansion of oil and gas exploration. 

Lankford was also recognized as a human rights advocate. Besides, he has worked towards increased personal and religious liberty. He was also a human and LGBTQ rights advocate. 

Lanford supported tax reduction and the lowering of government spending. He also supported the repeal of income taxes as well as the estate tax.

Lankford was part of the Senators that warned the Iranian government against a nuclear deal. He signed the letter to warn the government against any nuclear deal with the U.S. government. But the letter attracted backlashes from the President and Congress. 

Lankford was also condemned for opposing and rejecting the Electoral College results. But, his disapproval caused doubt on the validity of votes from the Black Community. He later apologized to the Black constituents.

But, he was criticized for signing a warning letter about a nuclear deal with the Iranian government. He was also criticized for rejecting an Electoral result that can disapprove the validity of votes from the Black community. Yet, he apologized to the affected Black Community.
