Got denied a job today because “I sounded desperate”

Published on

Welcome to Helpdesk. This week, we’re tackling a common job searching issue. Have you ever been told you “sounded desperate” and lost out on a job because of it? This is exactly what a Reddit user went through.

Here’s their story:

Just got off a technical interview and was told “hey you are a great candidate but we are going to pass on you”. So that sucks.

I ask why and the interviewer goes “Not to be rude, but when you said last week that “hey, just so you guys know, i’m ready to go and I want to work for you guys” you sounded desperate and that may rub some people the wrong way.”

It’s natural to feel disappointed and hurt by such feedback. It can feel like a personal attack. Especially when you were enthusiastic about the opportunity. However, you should remember that feedback is a chance to grow and improve, not a reflection of your worth or abilities.

Here are tips to help you improve your approach for future interviews:

1. Reflect and Learn

Take Time to Reflect

After receiving feedback, take a moment to reflect on the interview. Think about how you expressed your enthusiasm and what might have been perceived as desperation.

Identify Specifics

If possible, ask for specific examples from the interviewer. Understanding exactly what triggered their perception can help you make targeted improvements.

2. Show Enthusiasm with Confidence

Express Genuine Interest

When discussing why you want the job, focus on specific aspects of the role and the company that excite you. This shows that your interest is based on a genuine fit rather than a need for any job.

Highlight Your Value

Balance your enthusiasm with confidence in your skills and experience. Share examples of your achievements and how they align with the job requirements. This demonstrates that you’re not only eager but also capable.

3. Practice Your Delivery

Tone and Body Language

Pay attention to your tone of voice and body language. Practicing with a friend or in front of a mirror can help you strike the right balance between enthusiasm and composure.

Mock Interviews

Consider doing mock interviews with a mentor or using online resources. Constructive feedback from these sessions can be invaluable in fine-tuning your approach.

4. Prepare Thoughtfully

Research Thoroughly

The more you know about the company and the role, the more confident and less desperate you’ll appear. Prepare thoughtful questions that show your interest in the company’s future and your potential role in it.

Plan Your Responses

Prepare responses to common interview questions that highlight your strengths and fit for the role. Having well-thought-out answers can help you stay calm and focused.

5. Build Your Confidence

Positive Self-Talk

Remind yourself of your achievements and the value you bring. Positive self-talk can boost your confidence and help you project it during interviews.

Continuous Learning

Engage in activities that build your skills and knowledge. Continuous learning not only improves your qualifications but also reinforces your self-confidence.

6. Seek Support and Feedback

Join Professional Networks

Engage with professional groups and networks. Sharing experiences and receiving support from others in similar situations can be encouraging and motivating.

Utilize Career Services

If you’re a recent graduate, make use of your school’s career services. They often offer mock interviews and resume reviews that can help you improve.

7. Stay Resilient

Don’t Take It Personally

Rejection is a natural part of the job search process. It’s not a reflection of your worth or abilities. Use each experience as a learning opportunity.

Keep Applying

Stay proactive in your job search. The right opportunity is out there, and persistence is key. Every application and interview is a step closer to finding the right fit.
